STUDY
Urban image strategies
Visitors to Torino are greeted by a city with a particular atmosphere, a combination of characteristic elements that have sifted down through the architectonic history and into the urban fabric of the city. To highlight these distinctive elements, research commissioned by the Faculty of Architecture has established a system of rules for the design of piazzas, streets, gardens and, in general, elements that compose public space, guaranteeing a unitary aspect to the urban landscape. Organized into 150 files that are similar to an illustrated guidebook, the study has gathered a documented, historical reading of the city, functional and environmental surveys, suggestions and operative methods, and hierarchical timetables to guide the interventions. This is a pioneering project - Torino is one of the first cities in Italy to have a similar instrument - and it has become a deliberative resolution with the municipal council.

PROJECTS
Activities for young people
There are three projects that put young people at the center of development policies. The first, “Giovani e idee” - www.comune.torino.it/infogio/idee - promoted by Torino Internazionale and the City of Torino, offers technical advice and financial investments to support entrepreneurial ideas and innovative social projects that are presented by people under 30 years of age. The second project, “Cybercafè,” realized in coordination with the Province of Torino and municipalities of the metropolitan area and the Olympic valleys, offers places where young people can socialize in areas that have few opportunities of this kind. The aim is to stimulate enterprise, since young entrepreneurs have been entrusted with the management of these locales, which can encourage the development of commercial and cultural activities. The third project, “Forum Giovani,” was created in 2003 to simplify encounters with urban institutions. Torino Internazionale participated in this initiative and is convinced that young people should be the interlocutors when policy is discussed that is meant to benefit them.

Torino Internazionale also:

  • Initiated various activities involving associations in 2004 to focus on lines of action and construct an ecological network in Torino‚Äôs metropolitan area. This system sees apparently contradictory needs in a complementary way: the construction of new infrastructures, the preservation of parks, the upkeep of protected areas and the development of agriculture. Through its activities, representatives of local bodies, professionals, scholars, environmentalists, and trade unions have participated in work tables and discussions that are open to the public.
  • Has underwritten the “Protocol of Agreement for Public Ecological Acquisitions,” (April 2004), along with 12 local bodies and organizations to promote sustainable development. According to the findings of the European Union‚Äôs “Green Public Procurement,” the protocol introduces criteria of environmental sustainability in the purchase of goods like paper, office furniture and computers.
  • Has always participated in the Forum Agenda 21 of the Province of Torino.
